PlayBook OS New Update is Available Now

There is no longer that much anticipation going on around the BlackBerry Playbook now that the OS 2.0 is out and things have been quiet overall. RIM however has now released an update to the tablet that brings the PlayBook OS up to version 2.0.1.358. The update is said to bring about improvements in the web browser, Android app support and optimizations to some of the BlackBerry OS core apps.

Below you will find the detailed list of the updates:
  • Browser enhancements to address performance with some websites
  • Improvements to support Android apps
  • Optimization to Video Chat, PIM and BlackBerry Bridge applications
The RIM team is also suggesting there’s much more to the update, but they are not getting into specifics, so I would presume it’s about general bug fixes.
The PlayBook OS 2.0.1.358 update is now available OTA, if it doesn’t pop up on its own, just check manually for updates in the settings drop-down.

Price vs. Features Compatibility: Android vs. iOS

No doubt that the popularity of mobile apps is soaring ad the demand for them is going to be even higher in the years to come. At the moment, iOS apps and Android apps seems to dominate the apps marketplace. The question is, which is better one is better of the two?
The iOS App Store is home to over 425,000 applications whereas the Android App Market only offers a little over 2000,000. However, as per a couple of websites, the look and feels of iOS applications are better and more appealing as compared to similar applications on Android platform.

Given the variety of apps available, the selection process is relatively similar for both platforms. Though similar apps are widely available for both platforms, there seems to be a lot of iOS overlap in terms of gaming apps. An app that starts out as iOS exclusive will eventually gain popularity and a me-too Android version will be released shortly. Perfect examples of this include Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja.
On the costing front, popular apps on the Android Market are more than 2.5 times expensive on average those of their counterparts on the iOS App Store. Analyst firm Canalys’ App Interrogator study found that the top 100 paid applications on the Android service cost $3.74 on average, compared to an average cost of just $1.47 for the most popular paid iOS apps. The point to note here is the a paid app of Android is not always fully-functional unlike iOS apps. Made to fix example here is an iOS Skype app that enable users to enjoy both video and audio calls while the Android Skype app only allows texting!

US Judge Orders Google & Motorola to give Apple their Android Secrets

A breaking news that US Court Judge Richard Posner has ordered Google and Motorola to hand over development details of Android OS to Apple
Not only that, but Motorola Mobility must also provide Apple information regarding its pending acquisition by Google.

The judge said, “Google’s employees and documents are not within ‘possession, custody, or control’ of Motorola, and Motorola cannot force Google to produce documents or witnesses over Google’s objection.
It is rather strange that a judge should ask for Motorola and Google to hand over critical Android development information to Apple, which is their direct competitor not only in the smartphone market, but in the tablet one as well.
This is going to be an interesting one.

iPhone is more Popular than Android for WiFi

It is said in a survey that iPhone users use more WiFi network than Android users as Android users prefer their own mobile network whenever they feel to need to browse the internet.

The study however is not a general way to represent a global specimen, but based on user of smartphones in America only. In terms of percentage, 9% of iPhone users use mobile networks, while 68% of the ANdroid users are on ot. Comparatively, 71% of the iPhone users use WiFi and only 32% of the Android users are into it. This only shows where the trend for the advertisers must head to.
However in UK, WiFi is big with Android users, but at the same time, it is huge with iPhone users too, who also use mobile network equally. It then goes down to habit of browsing the internet basically or it could be about the strength of the WiFi connection and mobile networks services in these two regions while creates the difference.
Here below is the result of iPhoen and Android users WiFi usage survey in US and UK:

Android Stealing iOS Story dismissed by Larry Page

Steve Jobs was known for his fanaticism for his own ompany Apple, which is why he was such a technoly innovator and a genius. His authorized biography written by Walter Isaacson, shows that Jobs was angry with how Google supposedly stole certain aspects of the iOS mobile platform for Android OS. According to Jobs biography, he told the writer:
“I will spend my lasy dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong.”
Jobs expressed his extreme side saying:
“I’m going to destroy Android… I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

The reason as to why Jobs would do this according to Larry is:
“For a lot of companies, it’s useful for them to feel like they have an obvious competitor and to rally around that.”
It is strange that technology innovators would need negative sentiments too motivate their own team rather than asking them to make the world better on their with technology regardless of who else is copying them. Google’s Larry wants to stand clean on this and said that t was his privilege to have met Jobs during his last year in life.

Amazon Appstore now supports in-app purchases for Android devices

A feature that has been in Google Play’s Store for a while now is making its way to the Amazon Appstore, as developers now have the ability to integrate in-app purchases into their apps.

In-app payments can be in the form of additional features or subscriptions, as well as bonuses and upgrades for games.
Why is this important when it’s already available for Google Play apps you may ask? For one, it offers developers the ability to target users with custom Android devices able to use only Amazon Appstore as their app market, such as the Kindle Fire. It also offers the same for Android devices not approved by Google to access the Play Store.

Android App Design Guidelines Update

The Googlers over Android Design have just put up some new sections into their guide for Android developers.

Highlights include a brand new section on how to create a design layout for application settings, as well as how to link other Android applications and how to navigate to your app using widgets.
In case you haven’t checked it out. Android Design is great place to start if you’re looking to create your own app, or just want to fiddle around with their design templates. you can get started here, or jump yo whats been updated here, here and here.
